Online Hardware Store Making Things Easy

For those of us who are not well versed experts in home repair or construction hardware stores can be frustrating labyrinthine worlds of confusion. All those little pieces in hundreds of different compartments and sections. It is enough to make a guy looking for a specifically gaged screw for a door hinge have his head spinning. I can remember the specific feeling of dread that would come over me when my parents would send me to the local hardware store for something. There was nothing standing between me and the clerk’s snobbish scorn.

That is why an online hardware store is so much more acceptable and easy to wrap one’s head around. You can search for things by name and you have the wealth of information that the internet has to offer to all of us as a back up if you need to “check something out.” When compared to needing to ask the clerk at your local hardware store this sort of nimble internet research is a breath of fresh air.

When I needed new door locks and handles for my home I went online. Years ago I would have nervously fumbled my way into a hardware store where I would have been needlessly embarrassed by my lack of knowledge. Now with an online hardware store I can feel like I know or am at least aware of everything I’m looking for.

Quieter Door Hinges

Squeaky door hinges are not the worst thing to ever happen to your home but that does not mean you are going to want to deal with them forever. People in your home open and close doors all the time. You and your family and/or roommates could be on wildly differing sleep schedules and no one wants to feel like they can’t just open up whatever old door they want at any time they want. Being afraid to open doors for fear of waking people up? That is no way to live.

And so you WD40 your door hinges over and over again. Eventually though it becomes apparent that you can’t spray your way out of this problem. Eventually you need to get some brand new door hinges. Luckily door hinges are not expensive and they are also among the easiest things to install around. All you need is an extra set of hands to hold

the door up and a screw driver. Getting rid of those squeaky doors should be enough to get someone living with you to help you out.

A new door hinge can really quiet down your home. Peace and quiet are important qualities to find in a living situation. Don’t let some noisy doors keep that away from you.

Locking Doors

Did you know that in 2011 there are still some brave souls who don’t lock their doors? Seriously, I was stunned when a friend recently told me that her parents never locked their doors. She even added that they don’t lock their doors when they go away for long trips. In a way I guess I should feel good about this. These adults who are normal in every other way trust mankind and their neighborhood enough to not sweat the locks. There is something great about this.

That said, door locks are meant to be used and if my roommates started getting cavalier about locking ours, I would insist on very terse and decisive apartment meeting. I would remind them that we all have laptops and some of us get paid in cash. I would talk about our wonderful kitchen appliances and all the other stuff we don’t want stolen. Honestly it is hard to imagine not locking our doors.

Door locks exist for a reason. There are people and things that want to get into our stuff. We are not precious about this; it is a reality we must accept. You will not catch me going away with my doors unlocked, ever.

Door Mail Slots!

I love things that are classics. I have classic style marble counter tops in my kitchen. We have a fairly vintage record player and stereo system in the living room. Our drapes are perfectly vintage blue with yellow flower patterns. The more I can make my home look like it was decorated by June Cleaver of Leave It To Beaver fame the better I, and my girlfriend, will feel. So it was shocking when she pointed out that our front door lacked the most old timey of touches; a door mail slot!

We spent so much time trying to get the right front door hardware and we forgot about this touch. Well obviously the problem needed to be addressed as soon as possible. So we went online and ordered the best door mail slot we could find. Installing it was easy given my comfort with light carpentry and before you know it our front door was all the more pleasing to us. We couldn’t wait for the mail to come pouring through that little slot.

And when the mail did come in we were happy to see that everything fit and the bin we left underneath the slot was perfectly sized for mail collection. We may not quite be the Cleavers yet but we are getting satisfyingly close.

Locks And Bathroom Accessories

A restroom without a lock is hardly a place to rest at all. Certainly during intimate moments the reassurance of a lock, even a small Transom Chain lock is reassuring. We spend some very private time in the bathroom, not just doing our business but also showering or just primping in the mirror. None of these activities should be ruined by unwanted guests. It’s the restroom after all.

There is nothing more embarrassing than someone walking in on you in the bathroom or even vice versa. Both parties end up leaving the situation beet red and awkward. New Roomies And Door Hardware

New roommates mean a lot of adjusting in your apartment. You have to find the room to stake your claim on things that have always been important to you while maintaining the flexibility to allow your roommates to get comfortable. It is of the utmost importance that everyone be able to live together in peace and harmony. You signed a lease after all, there is no turning back. It is with that in mind that I advise you to invest in some door hardware.

Door locks and handles are a great help when creating boundaries for your new roommates to not traverse. Sure, it is nice to get to know the people you are living with but doing so at the expense of your own privacy is a terrible way to go about this. Once a roommate feels welcome somewhere getting them to change their habits is going to be rough if not completely impossible. Apartment renters usually do not need to worry about fixing their place. It is usually the apartment owner’s responsibility. However, with great responsibility comes great…need to avoid that responsibility. Unfortunately most apartment owners do not tend to their apartments as they should, for the simple fact that they are not the ones living in it. Some owners wait for major fixes that cannot be avoided and rather hold on to the maintenance until they are forced to do it. But that does not mean that you, the renter, cannot make some small changes in your apartment in order to improve your lifestyle. Door knobs are a perfect example. They are a small element that the owner would probably not fix or change simply because the design is boring. But you can change it alone (if the owner approves, of course). It is not hard to install and can make your entrance look so much better. Doors are a very ancient technology. Humans have used these entry portals for millennia. There have been many aspects of entry that have changed. The first humans used great rocks as entry barriers for their homes. By Roman times, keys were being used to open door locks.

Mom’s Door Locks Lesson

My Mom's Door.

I was visiting my mom and we began to talk about Brooklyn and my new apartment.

Don’t be too careful, there’s a lot of freaks in that city.

Mom, a lot has changed since you lived there.

Did I ever tell you what happened when I was living in Park Slope? There were bars on the first story and second story windows and good door locks on the front door. Everyone thought that no one would try to get in through the third story window. So what did they do? The guy got in through the third story window. He went through all my jewelry and valuables and then he took the fire escape down to the apartment below me. And there was a girl there who was a night shift nurse and she came in and heard him and yelled. He ran away and she called the cops. They found all our valuables nearby, but they never caught him. So don’t be too careful and always lock all the windows and your door locks.

Okay mom.

I’m serious. You can’t be too careful! And if you have a door mail slot make sure it’s not big enough to fit any hands.

I’m pretty sure no hands can fit in the door mail slots.

Okay, but be careful.
